For addressable color projects that have to keep running if one pixel fails, I use WS2815 rather than the older 5V WS2812. This 10mm board runs 60 LEDs/m on 12V DC at about 12W/m, with the WS2815 IC built into each 5050 package and a backup data line that passes signal around a dead pixel.
Two practical reasons. It's 12V, so voltage drop over a run is far less of a headache than 5V, and the chip has a dual-data (backup) line — if one pixel is damaged, signal still reaches the LEDs after it instead of the whole tail going dark. It uses the same clock-less one-wire data timing most SPI controllers already speak, so code is straightforward.

Not directly — WS2815 runs on 12V and has a backup data pin. The data timing is similar, but power and wiring differ.
With the backup data line connected, the signal bypasses the bad pixel and the rest of the run keeps working.
That depends on the controller's refresh speed; for large counts use an SPI controller with enough memory and split into parallel data lines.
