LED Strip Lights for Aluminum Profile

Match the strip to the channel, choose the right diffuser, and build a clean dot-free linear fixture.

Overview

Why mount LED strips in an aluminum profile

An aluminum profile (also called an LED channel or extrusion) turns a bare flexible strip into a finished linear light fixture. It provides a heat sink, a mounting surface, and a diffuser that hides individual LED dots. This page explains how to match the strip to the profile, choose the cover, and install it correctly.

Heat dissipation

Aluminum pulls heat away from the PCB, lowering junction temperature and extending LED life.

Dot-free light

A frosted or opal cover diffuses the beam so individual LEDs disappear into a continuous line.

Clean finish

The channel hides wiring and adhesive and gives a rigid, professional mounting edge.

Matching

How to match strip width to the channel

The most common mistake is ordering a strip wider than the channel inner width. The PCB must sit flat on the base. Use this table as a starting point, then confirm the exact inner width on the profile datasheet.

PCB widthMinimum channel inner widthTypical strip type
5mm7mmNarrow COB / 2835 low-density
8mm10mmStandard 2835 / 5050 / most COB
10mm12mmHigh-density SMD / RGBW
12mm15mmHigh-power / addressable / 5-in-1
Leave 1-2mm clearance on each side. A strip forced into a narrow channel will lift at the edges and the cover will not clip shut.
Profiles

Channel types and diffuser covers

Profiles are named by how they mount. The same strip works in all of them; the difference is the installation detail and visible finish.

Surface mount

Screws or sticks onto any flat surface. The simplest option for cabinets and shelving.

Recessed / flush

Plastered into a groove so only the light line shows. Used in walls and ceilings.

Corner / angle

45-degree or 90-degree V-shape for internal corners and edge lighting.

Pendant / suspended

Hangs from wires for linear pendant fixtures over counters and workspaces.

Opal cover

Fully hides dots, loses 20-30% output. Best for shallow channels.

Frosted / clear

Frosted balances output and dots; clear keeps maximum brightness at high mounting.

Installation

Four-step installation

1

Measure and cut

Cut the profile with a hacksaw or miter saw. Cut the strip only at marked cut lines.

2

Fix the channel

Mount with screws or adhesive. For recessed profiles, plaster and sand flush first.

3

Stick the strip

Clean with alcohol, peel the backing, press in from one end. Wire before the final section.

4

Clip the cover

Press the diffuser along the channel. End caps and mounting brackets finish the fixture.

Products

Recommended strips for channel mounting

These strips are supplied on reels and cut to the length of the profile. COB is the default choice for dot-free linear light; high-density SMD is the value option.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Match the strip PCB width to the channel inner width. A 5mm strip fits channels with 7mm or wider inner width; 8mm strips need 10mm+; 10mm and 12mm strips need 12-15mm channels. Always leave 1-2mm clearance so the strip sits flat without forcing the edges.
COB is the better choice when you use a frosted or opal diffuser and want a completely dot-free line. SMD works with clear covers or when the channel is mounted high enough that individual LEDs are not visible. For shallow channels, high-density SMD (120-240 LEDs/m) is a cost-effective alternative.
For permanent indoor installations, yes. The aluminum acts as a heat sink, extends strip life, and hides the wiring. For short decorative runs or temporary setups, bare strips can be used with 3M adhesive. Outdoor installations always require a sealed channel or an IP-rated strip.
Clean the channel with isopropyl alcohol, peel the 3M backing, and press the strip in from one end. Avoid touching the adhesive. For long runs, add a small amount of neutral silicone at 50cm intervals. Do not use hot glue, which can damage the PCB.
Clear covers give maximum brightness but show LED dots. Frosted covers balance output and dot hiding. Opal covers fully hide dots but reduce output by 20-30%. Choose opal for shallow channels and close viewing, frosted for standard depths, clear only for high mounting or indirect cove lighting.
