Under Cabinet LED Tape

Hidden task and ambient light along kitchen and furniture cabinets - with the strip, driver and connectors specified correctly.

Overview

Why use LED tape under cabinets

Under cabinet LED tape adds hidden task and accent lighting along kitchen and furniture units. The strip is mounted on the underside of the wall cabinet, toward the front lip, so it lights the worktop without glare. This page covers choosing the strip, hiding the driver, and connecting multiple cabinet runs.

Task lighting

Bright, shadow-free light on the worktop for food prep and cooking.

Ambient light

Soft indirect light at night without switching on bright ceiling lights.

Slim fit

Low-profile strips and channels fit in the narrow cabinet lip.

Choosing

Choosing the strip: density, color and CRI

Three choices determine the visible result. Specify them together rather than ordering a generic strip.

ChoiceRecommendationWhy
Density120-240 LEDs/m or COBPrevents visible dots at close range
Color temperature2700-3000K ambient, 4000K taskWarm kitchen feel with accurate task colors
CRIRa 90+True food and surface colors
Voltage24VLess dimming across long cabinet runs than 12V
Power

Wiring, dimming and hiding the driver

Two installation styles are common. Hardwired gives a clean switched finish; plug-in is faster and renter-friendly.

Hardwired

AC driver connected to a switched wall circuit, hidden inside or on top of a cabinet. Controlled by the wall switch and optional dimmer.

Plug-in

Driver plugs into a nearby outlet with an inline dimmer or remote. Quick to install and easy to remove.

Size the driver at 1.2-1.3x total wattage across all connected cabinets. One larger driver is cleaner than a separate driver under each unit.
Installation

Installation and connecting cabinet runs

1

Plan the runs

Measure each cabinet and mark returns. Plan one driver location and the route of low-voltage wire.

2

Mount channels

Fix shallow surface channels under the front lip, or clean the surface for bare strips.

3

Connect sections

Use snap connectors and corner jumpers between cabinets. Check polarity on every joint.

4

Wire and test

Connect to the driver, test color and dimming before pressing the covers shut.

Products

Recommended strips and accessories

COB and high-density SMD are the default under-cabinet choices, with solderless connectors for joins and a low-profile channel.

COB LED Strip

COB LED Strip

Dot-free line at close range, ideal in shallow under-cabinet channels.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Use 2700K-3000K to match warm residential interiors and evening use, or 3500K-4000K for task lighting where accurate food prep colors matter. Avoid 5000K+ in kitchens, which feels cold. Tunable white strips let you switch between warm ambient and brighter task light.
Mount the driver inside a wall cabinet, on top of the wall unit, or in a nearby junction box. Low-voltage wire runs from the driver to the strip and can be hidden behind the cabinet lip. For a fully hardwired install, use an AC driver connected to a switched wall circuit.
Yes. Use solderless snap connectors between strip sections and corner jumper cables around cabinet returns. Confirm the connector matches the PCB width (5/8/10/12mm) and pin count. For permanent installs, soldered joints are more reliable, but clip connectors are fine for accessible locations.
A shallow aluminum channel is recommended: it hides the dots, protects the strip and gives a finished edge. Low-profile 5-7mm surface channels sit almost flush under the cabinet. On a budget, bare high-density strips with 3M adhesive work, but visible dots are more likely at close range.
Choose 120 LEDs/m or higher for under-cabinet use. At 60 LEDs/m the dots are visible at normal standing distance, especially with a clear or no cover. COB strips or 240 LED/m SMD give a continuous line and are the default for new cabinet installations.
