2835 is the modern workhorse, 3528 is outdated, 5050 is for RGB. For white lighting, 2835 wins on efficiency and brightness per watt.

The Numbers Mean Physical Size
2835 means 2.8mm x 3.5mm. 3528 means 3.5mm x 2.8mm. 5050 means 5.0mm x 5.0mm. Bigger package does not always mean brighter.
| Package | Size | LEDs/pack | Efficiency | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2835 | 2.8x3.5mm | 1 chip | High (180lm/W) | White lighting |
| 3528 | 3.5x2.8mm | 1 chip | Low (100lm/W) | Discontinued |
| 5050 | 5.0x5.0mm | 3 chips | Medium | RGB only |
| 5630 | 5.6x3.0mm | 1 chip | High | High-output white |
Why 2835 Won
3528 was the old standard but it is inefficient. 2835 uses newer LED die technology and gets 180lm/W vs 3528 at 100lm/W. Same power, almost double the light. That is why 3528 is being phased out.
5050 is for RGB only. It packs 3 chips (red, green, blue) in one package. For white lighting, 2835 is the right choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5050 brighter than 2835?
For white light, no. A 5050 white strip has one white chip, same as 2835 but less efficient. 5050 is only brighter for RGB.
