After 8 years shipping COB strips in every CCT, here's the rule: 2700K for bedrooms and hotels, 3000K for living rooms and restaurants, 4000K for kitchens and offices, 6500K for retail display. If unsure, 3000K is the safe bet.

What Color Temperature Actually Means (Stop Guessing Kelvin Numbers)
I've lost count of how many customers order 6500K for a living room and then realize it looks like a dentist office. Color temperature isn't complicated once you stop treating Kelvin like a mystery number.
At 2700K, the light is warm yellow — like a candle or a sunset. At 6500K, it's blue-white — like daylight on a cloudy day. Everything in between is just a mix.
| Color Temp | Mood | Best For | Avoid For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2700K | Very warm, cozy | Bedrooms, hotels, lounges | Kitchen task areas |
| 3000K | Warm, inviting | Living rooms, restaurants, bars | Hospitals, garages |
| 4000K | Neutral, clear | Kitchens, offices, bathrooms | Romantic dining |
| 5000K | Bright white | Retail, workshops, garages | Bedrooms, spas |
| 6500K | Cool blue-white | Hospitals, retail display | Living rooms, bedrooms |
The trick nobody tells you: the same fixture in 2700K and 4000K can look like completely different products. Always ask for a sample reel before ordering a full project.
Where Each Color Temperature Actually Works (And Where It Fails)
2700K — The Hotel Lobby Look
This is what luxury hotels use in the evening. It makes leather, wood, and skin look warm and inviting. But put it in a kitchen and food looks yellow. Put it in a garage and you can't see what you're working on.
3000K — The Safe Default
If you're flipping a house or doing a restaurant fit-out and you don't want to think about it, 3000K is the answer. We sell more 3000K than any other CCT by a factor of 3.
4000K — The Work Light
Kitchens, bathrooms, offices — places where you need to see what you're doing. 4000K doesn't feel warm, but it doesn't feel cold either.
6500K — The Retail/Medical Choice
Jewelry stores and art galleries use 6500K because it shows true colors. You'd never want it in a bedroom — it's like sleeping under a fluorescent tube.
Tunable White vs Fixed CCT: Which Should You Buy?
Tunable white strips let you slide from 2700K to 6500K with a remote. But here's what people don't tell you: tunable strips cost 2-3x more, need a special controller, and most people set it once and never touch it again.
Buy tunable for: high-end residential where the client wants morning daylight and evening warmth. Buy fixed CCT for: commercial, hospitality, or any project where the lighting purpose is fixed.
| Factor | Fixed CCT | Tunable White |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per meter | $3-5 | $8-15 |
| Controller needed | Simple dimmer | Special tunable driver |
| Setup time | 10 minutes | 1-2 hours |
| Who changes it | Nobody | The client (rarely) |
| Best for | Commercial, hospitality | High-end residential |
Common Color Temperature Mistakes We See On Site
After hundreds of on-site consultations, these are the CCT mistakes that come up again and again.
Mixed color temperatures in one space
Someone put 4000K under the cabinets and 3000K in the cove. The result looks wrong. Pick one CCT per zone and stick to it.
Using 6500K to 'save money'
Some buyers think cooler = brighter = better value. Wrong. 6500K strips are usually the same lumen output, just bluer. They look harsh and clinical.
Forgetting CRI matters more than CCT
You picked 3000K but the strip has CRI 70. The light will look gray and washed out no matter the color temperature. CRI 90+ is non-negotiable for display spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3000K or 4000K better for a kitchen?
4000K for the task area (countertops, under cabinet), 3000K for the cove. If you can only choose one, 4000K — you need to see food clearly.
Can I mix 2700K and 4000K strips in the same room?
Not on the same circuit or in the same visual field. It will look wrong. Use different zones with separate circuits, or use tunable white.
What color temperature makes a room look bigger?
Cooler temperatures (4000K+) visually expand a space, but they also make it feel less cozy. For small bedrooms, 2700K-3000K with good lighting design will feel larger than 6500K ever could.
