Hot Tub, Spa & Sauna LED Strip Lighting: Heat and Humidity-Rated IP68 Setups

Saunas and hot-tub rooms combine the two things ordinary LED strips hate most - sustained high heat and constant humidity/steam - so this is not a place to use standard tape. Specify high-temperature IP68 silicone-extruded strip rated for the actual cabin temperature, keep drivers and controllers outside the hot zone, and treat waterproofing and thermal de-rating as the whole design problem. Get the rating and placement right and the lighting becomes a mood feature that survives years of steam cycles.

Hot Tub, Spa & Sauna LED Strip Lighting: Heat and Humidity-Rated IP68 Setups

Heat and Steam Are the Entire Challenge

Inside a sauna the air can run 70-100C, surfaces vibrate with humidity, and water drips from benches. Around a hot tub it's warm, wet and chlorinated. Standard LED strip is rated for typical room temperatures and its solder joints, adhesive and phosphor all age fast when they're cooked and steamed every day.

Lighting these spaces is absolutely possible - LED is still far better than hot halogen in a wooden cabin - but you must use products engineered for high temperature and immersion-grade moisture, and you must keep the parts that hate heat (drivers, controllers) outside the hot zone. Rating and placement are the whole job.

High-Temperature IP68 Silicone Extrusion for the Sauna

For inside the sauna cabin, use high-temperature-rated, fully encapsulated strip. An IP68 TPU extrusion (the TP1010 type) is solid-encapsulated in tough, heat-resistant polymer rather than merely taped, so it tolerates sustained cabin heat, direct steam and water contact without the PCB or solder joints being exposed.

Mount it low and indirect - under bench edges and along floor-level skirting - where the air is coolest and the glow is soft, rather than up near the ceiling where heat pools highest. Warm dim light low in the cabin is both more durable and more atmospheric than bright overhead light.

Hot-Tub and Steam-Room Surrounds

Outside the hottest cabin but still wet - the hot-tub rim, shower/steam walls, plunge area - an IP67 solid silicone-extrusion COB strip gives a continuous, dot-free, fully sealed glow that copes with splash, steam and chlorinated water while looking premium around the water.

The IP67 silicone-extrusion COB in the wider 48-series body is robust for these surrounds - solid encapsulation keeps moisture out and the COB face stays seamless. Run it under the tub rim or along wall coves aimed away from the water surface to avoid glare reflecting off the water into users' eyes.

Keep Drivers and Dimmers Outside the Hot Zone

This is the rule that separates working sauna lighting from repeated failures: the LED strip can be engineered for heat, but the power supply and dimming electronics generally cannot. Run only the low-voltage sealed strip inside the cabin/tub area, and locate the driver and controller outside in a dry, ambient-temperature space - a cupboard, ceiling void or plant room - feeding through the wall with sealed glands.

A waterproof dimmable power supply in the 60-300W range, mounted outside the hot zone, lets you dim the sauna and tub lighting for mood while keeping the electronics cool and dry. Size it to the strip load and keep it accessible for service. Never enclose a driver inside the hot cabin.

Mood, Safety and the Details

  • Use warm 2400-2700K dim light; sauna lighting is relaxation, not task lighting.
  • De-rate for heat - high temperature reduces strip life and driver capacity.
  • Seal every cable entry through the cabin wall with proper grommets/glands.
  • Prefer solid silicone/TPU extrusion over hollow sleeve, which can trap steam.
  • Add a very low floor-level glow for safe movement in steamy, low-visibility conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put LED strip lights inside a sauna?

Yes, but only with high-temperature-rated, fully encapsulated IP68 TPU/silicone-extrusion strip mounted low under benches and along skirting where it's coolest, with all drivers and controllers kept outside the hot cabin and fed through sealed wall glands. Standard indoor strip will fail quickly in sauna heat and steam.

What temperature can sauna LED strips handle?

Use strip explicitly rated for the cabin temperature you run - solid TPU/silicone extrusion high-temp products are built for sustained sauna conditions - but still mount them in the cooler lower zones and avoid the ceiling where the hottest air pools. Heat de-rates electronics, so the driver always stays outside.

What LED strip is best around a hot tub?

IP67 or IP68 solid silicone-extrusion COB strip, which is fully sealed against splash, steam and chlorinated water and gives a seamless dot-free glow. Mount it under the tub rim or in wall coves aimed away from the water surface to avoid glare, and power it from a waterproof dimmable supply in a dry location.

Where do you put the LED driver for a sauna or hot tub?

Outside the hot and wet zone entirely - in a dry, ambient-temperature cupboard, ceiling void or plant room - running only the low-voltage sealed strip into the cabin or tub area through sealed cable glands. Drivers and dimmers are the heat- and moisture-sensitive parts, so never enclose them in the sauna.

What color temperature should sauna and hot-tub lighting be?

Warm and dim, around 2400-2700K, positioned low and indirect. Sauna and hot-tub lighting is for relaxation and safe movement in steam, not bright illumination, and warm low light is both more atmospheric and easier on the eyes in a steamy, low-visibility room.
