Neon Sign Above a Kitchen Pass or Pizza Oven: Heat Rating and Life

A neon sign above a kitchen pass or pizza oven lives in the hottest, greasiest air in the room. Standard silicone flex rated to 60 C will yellow, stiffen and drop lumen within a summer. I tell clients where a neon sign belongs above a kitchen, and where a high-temperature rated flex is the only honest call.

The heat that rises off a busy pass
Hot air does not rise straight up and stop. It pours off a pass, rolls across the ceiling, and hangs above the service line at 40 to 55 C on a dinner rush. A neon sign hung 600 mm above that pass is not living in room temperature; it is living in a convection oven, and the silicone jacket is absorbing that heat every service.
I pulled a sign out of a pizza place after 18 months and the silicone had gone from clear to a brownish yellow, and the lumen output was down about 40 percent. The datasheet said the flex was good to 60 C, but it never said what happens after 4,000 hours at 55 C.

What heat actually does to neon flex
Silicone is more heat-tolerant than PVC, but it is not indestructible. Above about 60 C sustained, the LED chips lose lumen faster, the diffuser yellows, and the solder joints at the cut points become brittle. Add kitchen grease and steam, and the diffuser goes tacky as well as yellow.
- Sustained over 60 C: lumen drops roughly double the rated rate.
- Over 70 C: diffuser yellows visibly within months.
- Steam and grease: diffuser clouds, needs monthly cleaning.
Measure the air at the sign location, not the room thermostat.
| Position above kitchen | Air temperature at sign | Standard flex OK? |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 m above a cold prep area | 25-30 C | Yes |
| 600 mm above a pass | 45-55 C | Borderline |
| Directly above a pizza oven | 60-75 C | No, use rated flex |
Where I mount kitchen neon
I keep neon signs off the hot zone entirely where I can. A logo on the front wall of the dining room, above a shelf in the bar, or on the facade all work beautifully. The trouble starts when the designer puts the sign directly over the pass because that is where the customer will see it. I negotiate the gap: at least 1.2 m above the pass, and offset to one side of the heat plume.
If the client insists on the sign above the pass, I spec a high-temperature rated silicone flex good to 90 C, mount it on an aluminium channel that acts as a heat sink, and I write the shorter life into the service agreement. Six to eight years instead of ten to twelve. Nobody is surprised at year three.

Cleaning and maintenance above a kitchen
Kitchen grease is transparent when it goes on and brown when it has been baked on for six months. A neon flex above a pass needs a monthly wipe with a mild detergent and a microfibre, otherwise the diffuser clouds and the glow dims even if the LEDs are fine. Abrasive cleaners eat silicone; do not let the kitchen staff scrub it with a scouring pad.
Grease on the driver cooling fins is the silent killer; it runs hot and shortens life.
| Task | Frequency | What I use |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe diffuser | Monthly | Mild detergent, microfibre |
| Check end caps | Every 6 months | Tighten if steam has loosened glands |
| Inspect driver vent | Every 6 months | Clear grease from the cooling fins |
The driver itself deserves special treatment. I mount it outside the heat plume, in a vented box, never directly above the oven. A driver at 70 C inside its box fails in two years no matter how good the flex is.
When a neon sign is the wrong product
If the sign must sit directly above a pizza oven, a char grill, or a wok burner, I stop pushing neon flex and recommend a sealed LED panel or a custom acrylic sign instead. Neon flex is a decorative linear light, not a heat-rated fixture. There is a point where no spec sheet will save it, and that point is about 75 C sustained.
- Over 70 C sustained: choose a sealed fixture, not neon flex.
- Over direct steam: add a splash cover or move the sign.
- Above a fryer: plan monthly cleaning into the contract.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I put a neon sign above a kitchen pass?
Yes, but not within 600 mm of the heat plume. Air above a busy pass runs 45-55 C, and standard silicone flex rated to 60 C will yellow and lose lumen within 18 months. Mount it at least 1.2 m above the pass and offset to one side, or spec a high-temperature flex good to 90 C and accept a shorter service life.
How hot can silicone neon flex handle?
Standard silicone flex is rated to about 60 C continuous. Above that, lumen decay doubles and the diffuser starts to yellow. High-temperature rated flex handles 85-90 C sustained. But the rating is for the air around the tube; the tube itself runs 10-15 C hotter than ambient, so leave headroom. Never push a 60 C tube into a 55 C air pocket.
Does grease damage a neon sign in a kitchen?
It clouds the diffuser. Kitchen grease bakes onto the silicone and turns brown, which dims the glow even when the LEDs are fine. Wipe the diffuser monthly with mild detergent and a microfibre. Never use a scouring pad or abrasive cleaner; those scratch the silicone and make it trap more grease next time.
Where should I hide the driver for a kitchen neon sign?
Outside the heat plume, in a vented box, never directly above the pass or oven. A driver in a sealed box at 70 C fails in two years. Give it 50 mm clearance around the case, point the vents away from grease, and mount it within 5 m of the sign so the low-voltage tail stays short. Check the cooling fins every six months.
When is neon the wrong choice for a hot kitchen?
When the sign must sit directly above a pizza oven, char grill or wok burner where sustained air temperature hits 70 C or more. No silicone flex lasts long there, even high-temperature rated units. Choose a sealed LED panel or an acrylic lightbox instead, which has no exposed jacket to yellow. Save neon for the dining room and bar walls.
